TANTIE TALK:
It not easy when yuh old in dis town. Is like nobody want nothing to
do wid anyting old. De old buildings does suddenly get 'precious'
after dey get burn down. De old community way of living suddenly
becomes 'fondly nostalgic' when yuh hear 'bout young people running
wild and ending up dead or in jail. And de old people... well, what
ah go say? Well, some just lucky eef dey manage to get shove in
ah ole people home. Odderwise, is ah nex one living on de streets.
Even eef yuh manage to put aside ah lil sumting and yuh reach yuh
'golden years' fairly healthy, it not easy trying to enjoy said
years. Nobody tekking orn de needs of de older folk at all.
After all yuh chirren grow-up and eef both you and yuh partner
survive, yuh have ah house dat might be too big fuh yuh needs, so
yuh decide to sell and look for a smaller place. But when yuh
looking at all de townhouse and condominium dat was supposedly
designed so dat older folks could have affordable housing in a nice
community, yuh have to wonder who idea of a sick joke dat design is.
Eef is not 2, is 3 storey high and de bedrooms up on de top floor.
It eh have too many older folk who could be running up and down stairs
all de time! Not to mention some does have fancy split level all thru
de palce...and yuh know when de eyes failing, de bi-focals does be
more of a hindrance than a help. And to top it off, plenty ah dese
so called communities sitting down in de back ah nowhere wid no
grocery, church, pharmacy or shopping within walking distance, and no
kinda communal activities catering for older people. Is not everybody
who could play tennis & basketball or football after dey pass 40, not
to mention 60 or 80! Anybody ever really sit down and plan dese tings
or is jes ah vaps whey hit dem and dey feel it could work?
What about medical facilities? Yuh would tink dat even eef de
Government didn't/couldn't provide ah lil health centre kinda something
in de neighbourhood, some bright spark doctors and insurance people
could set up de same kinda ting fuh de people and make some mileage
outta de thing as well as dollars.
Nobody doh care 'bout de ole people and dem, but dey seem to forget
dat eef dey eh dead young dey bound to must get old.
