TANTIE TALK

Well, mih friends and gentle people... and eef yuh eh understand whey
ah coming from, is because yuh wasn't dere... and yuh bound to regret
it because yuh bound to meet somebody who was dere. So to help yuh
ease yuh woes, let mih tell yuh 'bout what yuh did miss...

De idea was simple - have ah fete like we used to have long time with
real music dat have actual lyrics and it fuh ah worthy cause too -
de Retired Calypsonians Medical Fund. De execution ah de simple plan
was never going to be easy, but Ainsworth, Ibn and Terry managed to
pull it orf wid 'a little help from dey friends'. BeeWee did bring
Sparrow (first class if yuh please) wid 5 musicians from foreign.
And de Birdie did put down ah show dat Tantie still trying to invent
ah word to describe. So eef allyuh could come up wid one word dat
could describe vintage, classic, ribald Sparrow at his "double
entendre" best, Tantie would love to know it. Eddy Grant donated a
performance of "Boots" flying in Gabby for the event and sponsored
15 tickets (and transport) for the Blind Welfare Association members.

Stalin's performance wid David Rudder was as fus class as de tickets
BeeWee did give Sparrow and it really made yuh realise how much we
have lost recently and why this Fund and other avenues of support
are needed in this indigenous aspect of T&T's culture. We jes lucky
to have some ah de early recordings ah dese pioneers, and many more
exist but forgotten in somebody cupboard somewhere. What we need is to make ah concerted effort to get these back into de limelight.
Tantie's eyes did run some water when de DJ played Sugar Bum Bum
and Kitch wasn't on de stage. 3 Canal did their remake of Merchant's classic Um Ba Yo. It wus real good to see de youngsters paying homage to their predecessors. And speaking of youngsters,  Machel who was in de audience, was persuaded to come on stage to do his unforgettable 'Too Young to Soca'. St James Tripolians and Laventille Rhythm Section gave us all too brief flash-backs to long time 'house party' days before mako-big piles ah speakers was moving yuh clothes more than de breeze.

De DJs gave us "performances" we couldn't get otherwise, but the live
performances really made de difference with couples dancing and others entranced with smiles of sheer delight and contentment on their faces.

Let us hope we will continue to recognise, appreciate and support de
live performers before they are not ...
