TANTIE TALK:
Yes, mih chirren... Tantie want to tank yuh fuh all de kind words of
encouragement yuh does be sending. It does warm de cockels of mih
heart when ah read all dat mail. It be good to know dat allyuh
outside still remember home and ah hope allyuh teaching yuh chirren
who out dere 'bout home too... cause it look like de ones here doh
unnerstan' what and whey home is. It not nice when yuh open de papers
and see a 17 year old get shoot-up in a 'drug wars' according to de
police. He supposed to be bussing lil lime and tracking de young gyul
and ting. Long time, at 17 de most important ting on yuh mind was
which was de best house party to go to and how yuh was getting dere.
Too many tings changing. We losing de lil bit ah history we had...
de culture disappearing fast. How many chirren today know what halay
is? When last yuh see ah genuine paradise plum or guava sweetie?
Not to mention press and ice-block... and chilibibi! Yes chile, de
days of 5 cents channa in a brown paper cone long gorne. De sad ting
is de feeling, de sense ah community and jes plain fun ah dem days
doh seem to be surviving. When yuh used was to go in front de
Grand Stand fuh Intercol, it was ah big big event.. plenty more
crowd would come out to support de sides than today. And it eh have
nuttin' to do wid charging admission.
But it have ah little hope... like ah seeing a lil spark dat
struggling orn. De Windies cricket team seem to be de only ting dat
pulling people together. You does be seeing whole families going to
watch cricket. Dis is good! Ah jes hope dat dat feeling, dat
togetherness could spread to de rest ah everyday life.
God bless, chirren.
