TANTIE TALK:
Yuh nevah know jes who yuh could bounce up own in St. James. Dey
have all kinda characters down dere! But is one ah dem ah want to
tell yuh 'bout. Tantie pardner call to say he car break down in St.
James. So Tantie and she squeeze grab some tools to go see what we
could do. Time we reah, some odder people was arreddy trying to
jump-start de engine, but nuttin' was happening. Somebody did
remember ah time when det had break down in nearly de same place some
time aback and ah fella from by de gas station had come and sort him
out. So dey went and look fuh de man.
Well chile, dis character sweet too bad! He mout doh stop talking
and yuh wouldn't know to look at him, but he real know what he doing.
Fus ting as he reach "dat starter moto' giving problems.. ah feel ah
go have to pull it down". Well, Tantie, de squeeze and everybody
else eh know what de heck he talking bout, so all we could say was ok.
Mih boy start to dig up in a dutty plastic bag and produce he tools
fuh de job. He pull orf de ting, open it up and is true! It had
some wires inside dat come loose.
Now 10 o' clock in de night in St. James, yuh doh expect to see
nobody walking past wid a soldering iron, but boyo did know exactly
whey to go and get it fix-up. So he went, but he insist dat
"somebody come to see what going orn". He come back wid de ting and
start to put back de moto' together, all de while fending orf de
whole setta unsavoury characters dat did start to home in and
keeping up running commentary on exactly what he doing, in between
exchanging greeting wid what seem like more dan half de population ah
St. James.
After all was said and done, he put it back in de car and bam...
engine turn over one time. Well everybody was real impressed wid de
whole performance which had been lubricated with his preferred mix
of puncheon and bitters on ice. But de crowning moment was when
asked for his fee, he did hem and haw and den reluctantly called a
price of $30. Now ah mean, de man do some hard wuk in a hot engine
as he was on he was on he way home to bade orf, but he didn't
hesitate to stop and help somebody he didn't know from Adam and
who he cudda 'heng' for price.
Now eef dat eh ah true Trini ... I eh know what is!
