TANTIE TALK:
Yuh know it's interesting sometimes to pickup a dictionary and read the meaning of words, then compare the meaning with the day-to-day usage... especially the usage made by us Trinis. Language is a real strange phenomenon, we use it and abuse it like nothing else...except maybe our bodies, but luckily it endures better than our bodies.

Tantie gets some interesting email from people who have problems with the vernacular in TANTIE TALK...aside from those who recoil at the mere sight and/or sound of anything but "the Queen's English", there are those who will deign to peruse the TALK, but complain that the idiom gets in the way
off the message. To these few connoisseurs, who firmly but mistakenly believe Tantie is brutalising the language, is dedicated these two opening paragraphs...henceforth Tantie lapseth into Trini.

As we on de topic of language and dictionary meanings, now is de time for some real 'Usage & Abusage' as we head into de Silly Season we call Elections...green verbs go spew forth in torrents as all and sundry get up on numerous platforms all over de country, giving their 'Sunday Best' accents an airing. Sad to say dese days it seems as if only vile bitterness allowed on de platforms...gone forever it seems are the days
of good ole picong dat was edged with just enough facts to sting real hard. And before yuh tell me dat in dem days ppl used to speak 'good english' let me jes say dat is not how yuh say de words, but what yuh words say dat important. Longtime ppl used to read, and conversation wasn't jes something to kill time.

And is not only our politicians dat talking a whole set of nonsense, it seem to be spreading...is when last yuh lissen to de radio? Newsreaders sounding as if dey never see words on paper before, pausing and breaking words not to mention sentances in de strangest of places wid a accent dat
nobody could recognise. Doh talk about de newspapers...headlines dat have very little or nothing to do with the story, and dey cyan't seem to agree on people age at all. You go read a story in one paper dat say Mr.X is aged 35 but de nex one(s) go have him as 28 or even 42!

Yes chirren, mucho interestin times ahead in T&T and de world...but sad to say we doh look like we want to learn at all. An oil well blow out down in Techier Village and cover a couple acres in real messy stuff. Plenty people affected, but I ent see no rush from either the Gov't or Opposition
to go help...but I sure all man go want to go rub shoulders wid Clinton who come to speak at some function. He go come and gone, and de ppl in Techier go still be covered in oil, breathing all kinda fumes dat cyant be good for dey lungs and we bwoys will still be taking potshots at each other, and terrorising dey poor 'brainwashed' party supporters wid the
old refrain as always - "If yuh not wid me yuh against me"

As I did say at de start...is interesting to look up de meaning of a word, allyuh mus pick one from the barrage we get thrown at us daily...

I go start yuh off:
