TANTIE TALK:
Well what a ting! Dis year was proof positive "Carnival is Bacchanal". Up to now de comess in de Savannah with de big bands ent get sort out, and it looking like de same thing happening in South too! All this because big men and women cyant sit down and agree on a simple setta rules...but wait nuh, what it is - politics or mas?

Doh forget de NCC that 'running the show' ent really de NCC that did start de ball rolling dat end up in this whole comess...dese only come in when de last set did self destruct mere weeks before Carnival. It have all kinda questions getting ask about who do and didn' do and what about de money dat was spennin' free sheet. Now Tants is de fus to admit de new seats fuh de VIPs in de Grand Stand nice too bad, but oh gorm dey coulda find something cheaper dat woulda give dem more change from de $3-4 million dey did spend fixing up de place! Worse yet, it wasn' a budgeted expense...so is what dey did blow de budget on? Dey been running a loss for 2-3 years now despite Gov't pelting money behind dem, de takings from dey shows and de selling of broadcast/reproduction rights. Dis year is $32 million dey get but like it was crossing de stage and a breeze ketch it because nobody ent sure where it gone.

But anyway, even wid all dat happening de carnival was nice dis year, kinda different - it seem like fewer people was around, but unfortunately some of those who was around did try dey best to spoil everybody else party. Rudder did call it right in High Mas: "see the ragamuffins congregate" ...and congregate dey did. tantie was witness to a mess of 11-18 year old males AND females, rampaging through Trini Revellers on Tuesday. It was getting so bad dat Blue Ventures had to stop playing...and we talking about 10:30 in de morning. De band now cross de Savannah and heading down Tragarete Rd., so yuh could imagine how dat did sour things. Luckily it didn' get outta hand, and dere was a couple of de older fellas in de group who was trying to get de rest to stay outside de band, but dem was spitting in de wind...eventually dey did jes drift off, but a couple times things was on de edge of getting serious, but de band Security did handle things well and didn' let de chirrens rattle dem.

Tantie ent know what happening to we Carnival...people calling for it to be 'sold' to the world as a spectator event like Rio, but interestingly enough dis year in Rio people say enough of de Sambadrome parade and startup about 18 'blocos' or street carnivals dat bring de celebrations back to the people where everybody could participate. Long time we mas never had a problem wid people jumping up in de bands, but dat was when carnival was for fun and wasn't all about competition and micro-costumes. If we could get get back to that feeling of everybody enjoying de festival whether yuh in costume or not, de whole society bound to benefit...after all, ent we have a Carnival Mentality? ;-)
