TANTIE TALK:
So this week we celebrating or at the very least observing International Wonen's Day, but what does it really mean? We having all kinda parade and workshop and seminar for the actual day, but what we doing all the rest of the year?

And when I say we I mean ALL Trinis. What do we as Trinis do to ensure women in our society are treated as equal human beings? How do we encourage and guide our girls and young women to believe in themselves as more than just bodies for display on the beaches, fetes, 'beauty' pagents and on the road/stage during Carnival? Where are the role models for them? Open a newspaper or turn on the local TV channels, and you'll see plenty images of females in advertisments, but are these what we really want to promote? Yes, we have female columnists and reporters/journalists, but are they taken seriously...how CAN they be taken seriously when we have a population with a literacy rate that is rapidly declining?

Do we encourage girls and young women to pursue ventures like mechanics and electronics and carpentry and masonry that don't come 'packaged in pink with frills and bows'? How many women are leaders or any where near the top in the Information Technology sector of our country? How many more could and SHOULD be there, but are kept back by Glass Ceilings? Why are there not more women in politics? Why are the ones there not allowed to have a voice of their own, rather than merely parroting the 'leaders' and toeing the Party Line? (Come to think of it, this is probably the only
instance of true 'equality' of the sexes in T&T!)

We keep looking to build our country but we continually neglect our greatest asset - our people, and then further negate this valuable resource by generally ignoring more than half of it...our women.

Hopefully very soon will we open our eyes and ears and brains for more than just "The Day".
