TANTIE TALK:                                               Back Chat
Yuh know yuh Tants does like to dabble wid de technology...after all allyuh wouldn' be gettin Trinidiary if it wasn't fuh de 'magic' of de internet. Never mind dat when Trini maccometre running on high de internet and email cyant touch we fuh speed! But anyways, as I saying...I was looking at what happening in de world wid Microsoft getting some good bouff fuh de comess dey passing off as software dat de whole world it seem cyant do widout, and den I start to notice plenty about Linux and de Open Source Movement. What really ketch mih eye though is when I start to see stories in de 'mainstream' press about how plenty governments all over de world decide dat dey looking serious at Open Source software because dey ent want nobody dictating how dey mus spend dey money.

From China to Peru and even in Europe, people coming to de realisation dat jes maybe it ent so good having all dey eggs in one basket, especially when is a basket from Microsoft wid a handle dat might fall off, or worse yet even though de basket design to hold eggs, de weave so sparse yuh eggs falling out anytime yuh pick it up. De amount of time and money people spending on fixing de holes dat showing up in Windows itself, not to mention de rest of software dat Microsoft have dey name on, it not funny...and what is worse is yuh cyant do nutting about it yuhself because is dey own proprietary thing dat making dem loud donzai and dem not letting nobody see exactly how de thing does work. Which is why de Open Source thing ketching on like wildfire...if de source code (which if yuh didn' know is like de raw ingredients & recipe for de software) is Open Source, it mean dat anybody could take de code and use it how dey want, but dey mus make dey own contribution to de code, available for anybody else to use.  What it does enable is people from all over de world to have access to a set of tools and utilities dat tried and tested and in large measure improved, dat ent costing de earth and even better, enabling de countries' talented programmers to not only show dey ability but it also creating opportunities for individuals and small companies to compete along wid de big boys and girls!

We supposed to have a 'professional' body for de IT industry in T&T, but to hear it from de 'masses' - dat is de actual programmers and networking and hardware gurus who does get dey hands dirty and only wearing a tie because it have a paycheck attached and dey have mortgage and car payments to make - de powers dat be in de ITPS (Information Technology Professional Society) really doh have a clue and it debatable as to if dey ever did as having an open mind would preclude willingly wearing/being a 'tie'. But anyways, a few weeks back de press had a story dat Microsoft go be setting up de T&T Gov't 'eGovernment' website but it seem dat nobody ent know for sure how dat story appear, if it was a mistake, misunderstanding or otherwise...but dat ent de point, if de story true is why de Gov't of T&T feel dey know better than de Gov't of Peru, de Gov't of Germany, de Gov't of China and even better because it matching we in size of population, de Gov't of de "western region of Spain called Extremadura, a mostly rural expanse of olive trees and tiny towns with 1.1 million inhabitants. In April, the government launched an unorthodox campaign to convert all the area's computer systems, in government offices, businesses and homes, from the Windows operating system to Linux, a free alternative."

Yuh could read de rest of de story in de Washington Post at:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A59197-2002Nov2?language=printer

Plenty people who see dat story done asking why T&T do seize de initiative and help demselves by not having to pay de not inconsiderable sum(s) being demanded by Microsoft dese days...and if yuh check out de new system dey have for licensing software yuh ent go believe what dey asking...jes now is like it go really be yuh firstborn! Tantie done start to look at de alternatives, and if yuh feel yuh want to do de same, dey have people who could help yuh make yuh choice in de groups listed below...and of course yuh could still try to bend de ear of yuh elected MP, de elections still fresh in dey mind and dey go probably take yuh on.

This was so very very good. It sure has started my day right. I am going to pass this on to others. It's refreshing to hear/read all these old slangs that I don't hear anymore unless by chance. And at times when talking to someone I may say some of our old saying. Just yesterday I said to some one "you don't have a chick a child or a parrot on a stick so no
need to complain that much"
