Tantie Talk
Yuh ever stop to think about jes how much money does be floating 'round de
place Carnival time? It occur to me to stop an' do a lil sums de other day
when I hear dat dem macco big bikini bands have 90% of dey sections dis
year as 'outside', all-inclusive sections. So, I ask around and was more
than jes suprised when I realise de numbers what playing in dis Carnival
thing.
Lewwe assume it have 'bout 200 people in each section and 'bout 30-40
sections, so we averaging around 6-8000 people per band...now we start to
add up. De average price of a costume in a band dese days running at least
$1000 (and some go say dat is a conservative guesstimate), so a band dat
sellout de costumes grossing between 6 and 8 MILLION dollars...yes, I did
say million. Now yuh could say dat music and materials and labour does
cost plenty, I ent arguing wid dat, but when yuh figure dat $300 does go
towards de band fee, it does get very interesting indeed. Wid de majority
of sections being outside de band, and dey collecting $300 x 200 people per
section x 30+ sections, yuh suddenly seeing de band collecting almost 2
million dollars jes so people could play wid dem. And, dat ent counting de
8 or 10 sections de band bringing demselves, dat is a nex $600,000...if dat
cyant pay for de road music by itself, I ent want to know jes how much dem
music bands charging dese days. Of course yuh realise we ent look at de
rest of de money yet...it still have $700 x 200 per section x 30+ sections
or $4.2 million floating around. What I really want to know is, if yuh buy
$1 million in beads, is how many years supply yuh go have?
Is real amazing when yuh stop and do dem sums oui... and when yuh realise
yuh have at least 4 if not 5 real BIG bands, yuh understan' de mas thing is
a real money earner...all de confusion wid doctors and BWEE needing money
woulda solve one time if Patos an' de boys decide to bring a band. Dey
bong to get de nex setta jokers jumping in de fete too and dey go have de
best music for near free - Police, Regiment and Prisons Brass in yuh tail.
Is joke I joking, but mas really have money in it...so is how come every
year, everybody bawling bout times hard? De masqueraders continuing to pay
more money for less costume every year and de band leaders saying things
costing too much...I really, really want to know jes how we does do it
every year, if things so bad? Bill Gates sponsoring Mas or what?
