Tantie Talk
De way things going dese days, we go not only miss de water after de well
done dry, we probably ent go notice when de well gone missing too! Young
people dese days getting a real raw deal, dey old before dey born an' dey
not even getting chance to enjoy what little childhood dey have. Is when
last yuh see somebody on a scooter? I mean a real long time Trini scooter
make from wood wid bearings for wheels and door hinge steering? When last
allyuh eat hallay? BTW, anybody who know who does still make hallay or
better yet KNOW how to make it let yuh Tantie know straight away please!
We only buying a setta toys for we chirren dat ent have no relevance to
we culture at all an' den we bawling dong de place when a nex misguided
youth kill or get killed. Tantie ent no Luddite, I ent say dat video games
should get ban like dey do in Greece, but when we start to use dem and TV
and de internet as if dey is babysitters for de chirren, something wrong.
When last yuh did sit dong wid a child an' read a book? Is when last yuh
read a book yuhself even?! We only following blindly de ways of we new
colonial masters dat dey not so subtley impressing 'pon we via TV, movies,
music and yes, de internet too. Even though we have a presence on de 'net
wid plenty Trini as well as other Caribbean websites, we still in large
measure jes goin' along wid how 'it is done elsewhere'. We grabbing
whatever dey have to offer an' not trying to take de good (if any) to
integrate wid we culture, no is freesheet it going dong' like we living
up dey. It have a place for everything, and we too have to realise when
we take we culture to dem place, we cyant ecpect dem to welcome de bacchanal and ole noise wid open arms!
What it all boil down to really is live and let live. We as Trinis have
a duty to let de rest of de world know how dey should be living. We lucky
in dat we endup living nice wid each other (generally, but every rule mus'
have exceptions) instead of having de rounds of ethnic/cultural/religious
strife dat seem to be de norm in de rest of de world. De real sad thing
though is dat we seem to be rushing headlong to embrace all dat we could
get dat 'not from here'...an' we doh care if it good bad or indifferent.
We ready to watch de nex episode of "Bomb de Towelheads" wid glee, because
'dem ppl bad'... but what we supposed to be doing is watching we back,
because we could never know when you-know-who go decide dem need our oil
and gas more than we.
