Tantie Talk

Is when las' yuh really check out what yuh does be eating? Jes de odder day Tants was feelin' lil lazy an' didn' want to do no cooking, so I say I go fix up wid one a dem package soup mix...well I get such a suprise when I read what in de ting, dat if I wasn' really hungry I woulda throw way de ting!

Dem foods get process to within a millimetre of de life! I doh know how it is more people ent jus' dropping dead yes...when yuh read de ingredients yuh swear yuh back in school in a chemistry class! De soup was supposed to be "Chicken Flavour Seashell Soup Mix", well I ent really doubting de 'chicken flavour', (mainly because it didn' taste like beef!) but I does real have problems when on de list of ingredients, "CHICKEN MEAT" does come in a distant 7th behind: WHEAT FLOUR, SALT, CORN STARCH, MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (PALM OLEIN) & SUGAR. But wait, there's more...as dey say on de TV, de rest of de ingredients almost as bad: ONION POWDER, CHICKEN FAT, TUMERIC, DRIED PARSLEY, SPICES, GARLIC POWDER, DISODIUM INOSINATE, NATURAL FLAVOURS, TBHQ AND CITRIC ACID (PRESERVATIVES),. And as if having de gall to have something called 'natural flavours' 15th on de list (I hope allyuh realise dat de position on de ingredient list does be most to least) of 16 total, de does go on to add de following: ALLERGY STATEMENT: MADE ON EQUIPMENT THAT ALSO PROCESSES MILK, EGG, FISH, SHRIMP, SOY. So is what? Yuh mean to tell me dem cyant wash out de equipment before de make a different batch of dey products? Tings so tight dey cyant stop de machine(s) running for even a 15 or 20 minutes to flush dem wid at least some hot water? I wonder if dey would stop de machines and dump a batch if de ketch a rat taking a bath.

But, it ent only soup dat have all kinda ingredient & additives dat nobody who ent have a degree or two in chemistry go recognise...looking at a tin of "Chicken Vienna Sausages" I seeing dese ingredients: CHICKEN, WATER, CEREAL BINDERS, STARCH, SPICES, SALT, SUGAR & SODIUM PHOSPHATE,, SODIUM ERYTHORBATE & SODIUM NITRITE (PRESERVATIVES), MSG (FLAVOUR ENHANCER). Is when people did stop eating fresh food? All de fridge in T&T an' de res' of de world suddenly gone bad why all dem ting need a setta chemical & preservative? About de only food I seeing dat (according to de ingredient listing) looking relatively 'natural' is Tuna: WHITE TUNA, WATER, VEGETABLE BROTH (INCLUDES SOY), SALT, PYROPHOSPHATE ADDED. Me ent know what de have 'pyrophosphate added' for, but it sounding like yuh could light a tin of tuna an use it as a Molotov Cocktail! I not even going into de "Nitrition facts" dat dey have on de labels, because dat is a whole nex joke all by itself.

Any time yuh find yuh have nuttin' to do, go find a good strong magnifying glass and read yuh food labels, jes like me yuh end up wondering exactly who is de major shareholders in all dem private hospitals dat sprouting up all over de place, I wonder if de doctors demselves stop and study dat.

Anyways, dis is a nice long holiweek dat coming up, so allyuh enjoy yuhself try to eat some REAL FOOD for a change and on Corpus Christi see if yuh could help out Mother T&T by planting a fruit tree at least.
