At least two-thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity: idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religous or political ideas.

Tantie Talk

So, it lookin' like until is dey family or somebody dey know who get kidnap or shoot, de 'Average Trini' doh really get worried. It unfortunately shows up jes how fickle an' ready to segregate WE Trinis could be. Tings always does seem to be happenin' to "dem", but when de mark buss an' "we", become "dem", is all hell does break loose. Is what happen dat make Trini forget how it used to be when nearly All Man Jack used to be if not poor, at least extremely un-rich an' happy wid it? What it is we had longtime, instead of money an' material tings, dat we used to be able to live happy and peaceably (fuh de most part) wid all we neighbours an' a community was plenty more than jes a nice ideal to be attained.

Is like de more years we independent an' emancipated is de more we dependent on de powers dat be to 'do something' 'bout almost every ting in we lives. Why it is we reach de stage dat somebody have to organise an' orchestrate demonstrations an' protests before anybody raise dey voice an' say dey have a problem? Why it is allyuh was wanting Tantie to organise protest against de situation wid Marli St? I did have mih say 'pon MY soapbox, is why yuh didn' find yuh own 'soapbox' and say yuh piece? When yuh go an' buy something dat doh wuk as advertised what yuh do? When yuh in de grocery an' de food long gone past de Expiry Date is what yuh does do? Or is dat yuh never stop to check on Expiry Dates? All dem tings not supposed to be so, an when it is yuh notice dem, is yuh right to make noise 'bout it. We doh have to wait fuh nobody to tell we when an' where an' how we mus think an' talk...yuh want to say something open yuh mouth an' say it. Now, dat doh mean dat ideas an' suggestions cyant get shared, what i mean is why wait fuh somebody to organise, why not jes do it!

I kinda have a lil problem wid de current email campaign to drive wid yuh lights on during de day to "show the Gov't what we citizens feel about crime". As far as I concerned all dat doing is generating plenty email and not much action. Is how many cars yuh notice in de las' week or so driving wid dey lights on besides de Volvos dat come standard wid dat feature? If yuh seriously feel driving wid yuh lights on during de day go do something, do it...when people stop yuh an' tell yuh yuh lights on tell dem why yuh have dem on... after it gone on long enough people go take notice an' be talking 'bout it all de time. De odder ting 'bout it is if yuh have a look at de email addresses dat it pass through, yuh go notice plenty names dat looking like family and friends of de 'sender'...is how many people OUTSIDE dat circuit go see de email? Nice idea, just dat dey went about it de wrong way. How come nobody ent start to spend de lunch hour standing quietly in front of de Honourable Minister Shoot-Himself-in-de-Foot office? If people start doing dat, I sure dat within a week dey go have so much people jest standing dere traffic go clog up an' he bong to mus notice and arks himself why dem people dere.

After all is said and hopefully done, what yuh Tants trying to get across is plain an' simple...yuh havin' problems wid what going on in yuh life, yuh job, yuh home, yuh community an' yuh country, how yuh go solve dem? De answer real easy, EMANCIPATE yuhself.

Doh wait fuh nobody to do tings, open yuh mouth an' say yuh say. Local Gov't Elections jes come an gone, alyuh know who yuh representatives be? So is how yuh feel yuh could get tings done nationally when yuh do know where to start in yuh own community?

BACKCHAT: Issue 28

I could not have said it better, Tantie. The crime situation is really out of hand. My husband and I are living in constant fear, not because we are rich, but because we rent a downstairs apartment from our landlord who is wealthy. He has already received phone threats from "would be kidnappers" and I am perpetually scared that we get caught up in the cross fire. Mr. Manning and his cronies need pull their heads out of the sand to do something NOW to ease this crime situation before more innocent blood is shed!

It is really disheartening to hear about all the kidnappping that is taking place. The citizens of TnT need to march daily in fron the PMOs office and demand that something be done. I believe the government will only take the drastic action that needs to be taken when and only when one of their own is kidnapped.
//Trinidad

I too am an average citizen and many of my circle of friends have also given up being on the roads after 10:00 PM for fear of being accosted by folks who want to make a quick buck. If I could, I would probably also think of leaving the shores of the land of my birth. At least in foreign there is a perception of the police doing their job and serving the average citizens. When businesses like restaurants, bars, nightclubs and cinemas realize that people are not going out late and they see the drop in their income, perhaps they will begin to lobby government for some action.
//Trinidad

I personally feel we the citizens of T&T should shutdown for 1 day and march into Port of Spain surround Parliment and demand action regarding kidnapping etc.. Is writing and telling our MPs helping, because if their view is like Manning they now feel "the average citizen is not affected". Thank you.

I am becoming increasingly bored with hearing about the Marli Street closure. Let's look at the issue a bit closer. Under the Vienna Convention and yes, Trinidad as an independent nation is part of this one too, Trinidad has the obligation to protect all foreign embassies. Now, we all know that Trinidad is having a very difficult time protecting its average citizen given the current crime wave. This makes a place as visible as the US Embassy a particular target. The majority of employees that work at the Embassy are Trinidadians and certainly almost all the visitors who come for visas are Trinidadians. So who do you think make up the majority of people who are being benefitted by this extra bit of protection? That's right, Trinidadian citizens. It is not unusual for host governments to take extra precautions to protect foreign embassies. While living in the Hague Netherlands, my own sidewalk was blocked off by the Dutch police to provide extra security to the Turkish Embassy which was located on my block. Was it a nuissance? Yes it was--but one that I could understand given the uncertain world we live in. So, it is time to start letting this one roll off our backs and start worrying about things that matter: poverty, drugs, HIV/AIDS, better education and opportunities for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.

Do you know that another brain drain has already started because of the crime situation in our country? Many people are sending their young people back to the countries where they are studying and telling them to make their life there and not here.
//Trinidad

I had a serious stomach ache over the kidnappings in Trinidad. Are we so stupid? Moreso, do we want to remain stupid and stand back and do nothing and blame the Government for all that! Wake up Trinis it is your country and your safety is being violated because you take everything passively and as jokes that will go away and leave itto the Gov't to fix. You are each respoonsible for what happens and the extent that you allow it to happen. Get your nenen , your tantie, brother, sister, friend and YOU most of all ..to take an active part in demanding from your Gov't immediate strict measures to cure our country's illness.
The future of your children is lying in your hands!!!

I think your e-mails are great, I enjoyed receiving it and fwded it to all of my co-workers, etc. Keep up the great work.
//Trinidad

I really do like this, I heard so many opinions on this issue of crime in our country, but not once have I heard of the solution, some sort of posibility, is it that we all really know that the solution isn't that really short in comming, and that so much needs to be done, that is seems as if thtere is no solution. We continue to through blame, but can we really blame the government, and say they are not doing anything, tell me folks, what are the solutions, how do we put a stop the this problem or at least slow it down.
