Tantie Talk

Yuh know we does be real givin' de powers dat be serious thunder all de time, not dat dey doh deserve it, but when dey actually come up to scratch an' sometimes even go de extra mile we doesn' always give dem dey due. Allyuh mus' be did see de commess what happen in Woodbrook on Saturday...Tantie did nearly get ketch in de waters, is only luck dat we did decide to go through St. james! But anyways as I was saying, de POS City Council deserve a lil mention fuh de way dey did jump in an' help out de folks who did get flood out. Early Sunday morning dey had big truck an' backhoe helping people clear out dey place, an' up till yesterday de was still at it. I hope dat dis is a sign of good tings to come, an is not only because a MP/Minister family living on de street dat dey did react wid such alacrity.

I hopin' as well dat de Diego Martin County Council go act similarly an help out de people up Perigord Road who also get 'flood' out...even though it hard to describe a deluge of water dat run through yuh house dat ON a hill as a flood. De culprit in did case ent no freak combination of high tide an' extra heavy rain, but de dotish combination of land developers who doh give a damn 'bout de people living below dem when dey clearing hillsides free sheet, an' de officials who either get 'encouraged' to turn a blind eye, or too dotish to realise what go happen when yuh strip all de trees an' other vegetation off a hillside. Allyuh remember what CEPEP was doing earlier in de year? De poor plebs who was glad fuh a lil earnings was basically doin' a scale down land developer routine - dey was lickin' way anything dat growing above road level to about 2-3metres on all de roadways running through de hills all over T&T. When yuh ask dem why, dey say dat is what dey get told to do. Conservation an' Common Sense sacrificed at the altar of Beautification an Remuneration. But as dey say, God doh sleep an' She not dead...check out who it is involve in CEPEP, an' who family get affected in de flooding.

If we really want to be de 'non-3rd world' nation we claim we could be, all dis dotishness have to stop. An' it ent only happening in dis particular setta national and local government, it has happened in all parts of T&T in de past (remember a few years ago Caroni an' further south was cutoff fuh several days) an' unfortunately de way tings going it bong to mus' happen again...unless we de people of T&T get off we collective backsides an' make sure dat ones in positions of responsibility actually act responsibly.

Oh an' by de way, de nex time yuh goin' to pelt dat cigarette or bottle or whatever, out yuh car window stop an' think 'bout where it endin' up... it jes might be on top yuh bed when de nex' flood come.

BACKCHAT: Issue 39

Dey like Melody kaiso, but yuh would really feel dat is only in T&T or in other developing countries dat de immigrations/customs authorities does man-handle yuh or try tuh mind yuh business. Stop cryin' dong yuh own. Ah not condonin' de squeeze dat de lady get - not by any means - but when las' yuh pas' through Miami? Customer service......yes. But not jes' in T&T.

After reading "Backchat" I want to warn my fellow Trini ladies beware of all these people who want to offer to help you "change tyres" They may be trying to kidnap you or get into the car for other reasons. There apparently was an incident in West Mall car park where after the fellow helped her change the flat he asked her for a drop. Fortunately she said that she had to go back into the Mall for something and would not be leaving just yet, she did get away. So folks be careful. This is not the Trinidad of old.

Trinidad Express (Oct. 13)... "A UNC activist who works closely with MP for Barataria Dr. Fuad Khan is behind a concerted move to stop Trinidad and Tobago from  being the headquarters of the Free Trade Areas of the Americas (FTAA). "

When someone goes through these lengths to deter people from visiting our country, then you have to wonder about Trinis' committment to country. For me, this person should be charged with treason. The fact that the Barataria MP has chosen not to distance himself or his party from (this individual) raises some eyebrows. Freedom of speech is a hell of a thing yes, boy!

Dear Tantie,

I have been living in Woodbrook now for just over 6 years and have watched the waters rise each time it rains untill now where so many were flooded out and so much lost. Thank God no lives were lost.

How can these people, City Engineers included, turn around and tell me that the construction of Pricemart and Movie Towne Mall have nothing to do with it?

When will we learn that Mother Nature is far superior to all of us and you cannot just build wherever you want without consequences? Do you remember the floods in Venezuela in Dec. 1999?

That was as a result of the same ignorance we display today.

NEMA says that they make recommendations but no one listens.

We as Trinis do nothing. We watch when others loose their property and say "poor people - somebody needs to do something about that" but nothing is ever done. We see it coming and we try to say that we need to do something but no one listens.

I have watched the Diego Martin River rise, is anything done? I have watched the river in Glencoe rise is anything done? No just more costruction and no additional infrastucture put in.

How can the drains built eons ago facilitate the water of today?

Speak up Trinis, eventually someone must listen...Trini
