Tantie Talk
So, Divali gone, Ramadan start, and it done "beginning to look a lot
like Christmas". It not easy de way one runnin' into de nex...an' lewwe not forget dat
accordin' to some, Christmas is de 'weekend before carnival'! It always amazing
dat even though we know long time exactly when de carnival go be, we still manage to
endup in a rush an' frenzy...as if we only find out yesterday dat it go be tomorrow!
Is when we go learn at all? We still feel we could 'ketch a vaps' an'
decide today we want to have a big bram event tomorrow...an' when it bus' we
wondering why! Allyuh remember at one time de hottest ting in town was de PanJazz Festival?
Yuh remember when dat did start dere wasn' no St. Lucia or Barbados or Grenada Jazz? So
is why dem still going an' de PanJazz Festival is but a distant memory? Is what kill it
off? Bad management? Dey jes didn' know what dey was doing? Somebody was fiddlin' wid de
money an' bus' it? I ent know, but I feel is a combination of all...especially dey jes
didn' know what dey was doing, or more likely dey didn' realise what it is dey had. Now
tants ent no 'promoter' or 'entertainment specialist' but I feel dat if is Jazz yuh pushing yuh
cyant jam 2000 people in Spectacula an' expect dem to feel good. Instead dey shoulda look
for 3-4 smaller venues dat could have at most 2-300 people, an' have at least 2 venues playing
evry night...dat is what Jazz is all about, de small intimate setting where yuh could wrapup
in de music. Now dat ent to say yuh cyant have a big bram concert, but dat bong to mus' be a
one time/grand finale ting even a open air lie dong on de grass all day picnic kinda ting dat
could be a freeco, because yuh done make yuh money wid de small sessions.
De reason I bring dis up is because I did pass in de Pan Royale at QRC
over de weeken'... it was nice too bad, even de rain couldn' spoil it. Renegades an'
Exodus was first class as always ...an' dey had was to be, coming as dey did after Bro.
Resistance 'put dong a wuk' in he Alma Mater. An' after de rain clear up, what I go say...it was de
perfect end to de evening wid de Ralph McDonald group living up to dey 'centre stage'
placement. De sax man was sweet too bad, an' wid Robbie pan along wid de vocalists all I could
say is if yuh wasn' dere yuh real miss out. But, dey have to make sure dey ent fall in de
same trap as PanJazz... dey have some real class acts performin' but wid all dat talent it ent
easy to spread it around, even over 4 nights - an' I give dem full marks fuh including
Tobago dis year.
De way it growing dey might have to hold it over 2 weekends jes now...but I seriously feel
dey have to give some thought about spreading de shows around, QRC go
still be de main venue, but what about a whole day 'festival' instead of de night show(s)? Now,
doh get mih wrong, dey doing a real good job wid de organising an' ting, de whole event
does run real smooth wid all de help from de whole QRC community...plenty lessons in what yuh
could achieve wid cooperation fuh de common good fuh ALL of T&T in dere.
If only all de events planned fuh carnival (an' otherwise) could comeoff like Pan Royale. But yuh know how it go endup...is like carnival really have to havebacchanal following close
on its heels, I waiting to see how long it go really take fuh Trinis to
realise dat de example shown by de QRC community is nothing more or less than "Carnival
Mentality" - doing what yuh have to do to get de job done, because is not only dat everybody
benefitting, but yuh doing it fuh de love of it.

BACKCHAT: Issue 41
Reader from Barcelona, I hear you looud & clear and agree with almost
all of what you said. It would be good to sit and have a chat about South/South trading
relationships one day. But my point was not targeted at Dr Khan; I was referring to
the gentleman/activist who works in his MP office. If you read the article, you would
see that the person was publicly denigrating T&T in his correspondence to the
external powers that be, highlighting all of the negatives and suggesting that that was why
the FTAA should not come to T&T. At no time did he give any solid reasoning as you
did.....just a total lambasting of our home. My reference to Dr Khan was that he said
nothing.
Saludos.

You still got the flashlight on the country, eh! I am with you on the
MAP business. The only time I saw a map of the city in which I was born, was in 2000;
I downloaded it from the Carnival web site. Mind you, it was only from St. James to
South Quay, showing the route of the bands, but anyting better than
nutten! Keep good till next week
