BACKCHAT: Issue 45

Thank you once again. As always it's a pleasure to read the information about our dear dear country.
//Canada

I don't know how I got on your mailing list. I appreciate what you are doing. But I don't appreciate the personal comments in bad English gutter talk in the same way I don't think local advertising should use
this low class dialect. Talking with a Trini accent is fine - bad English is not. It is my opinion that we should always try to speak properly and encourage the children to do the same. Nevertheless keep up the good work.
//Trinidad

thanks for all the info ...keep up the good work.
//Trinidad

Plenty Trinis doh realize (until dey lan' in forrin) dat some ah we local expressions could be very confusin' to people who not from here. For example, the typically Trini use of the word "travel" to mean "use public transport". "Ah doh have mih car so ah ha' to travel today". A non-Trini on hearing this wonders what s/he uses the car for... Not to travel in? Another example: when persons who work a couple blocks from Frederick Street plan to go shopping during their lunch hour dey does say "Ah goin een tong" even doh de done dey ahreddy! If dey try dat in foreign nIce people does get map an' show dem dat dey "are already in the heart of the city". Oddahs does jus' look at dem funny an' wonder what dialeck dey talkin'. De classic is one ah hear one day in a maxi travelling from Chaguanas to Port of Spain. I was dozing off when suddenly the passenger next to me slapped the driver on his thigh and shouted "Yuh mus' remembah! Deo di' dey dah day!" I woke up asking myself "Is she giving him some kind of music lessons? Nooo, she was reminding him that Deo(-narine / -nath / -dath..) had been there present on the day in question. It sweet, eh!
