TANTIE TALK - Tuesday 27 February 2007 Volume 8 Issue 09

So, as de Grandmaster himself did say "the Carnival is over..." (an' dat is one beautiful song in trute), is what allyuh feel 'bout de way tings was organise? Is long years now dat people sayin' to take de mas back to de streets, but as usual de powers dat be doh lissen an' when dey happen to do de right ting - fuh de wrong reasons of course, dey quick to wash dey foot an' jump in de photo-op sayin' it was dem idea all along.

How many years ago it is Minshall get good bouff fuh takin' Papillon round de Savannah? Is true dey did cause traffic to backup, but dat was because nobody was expectin' dem to do dat, not to mention dat 8 foot butterflies does take up PLENTY space! But de idea to take de mas back on de streets was definitely sound, de only real problem wid de idea in today's mas is de fact dat de size of de bands (players AND vehicles) done outgrow de vast majority of de streets in 'urban' T&T. About de only place you have room fuh dem macco big truck an' all dem people is on de highways! Is why we feel dat de selfsame vehicles we seein' blockin' traffic an' generally creatin' havoc in de cities an' towns fuh 363 days of de year ent go cause a problem over de 2 days of Carnival? An' worse yet, fuh Carnival it ent no one or two truck like de resta de year, is whole grap ah truck we dealin' wid onetime!

Exactly how many vehicle it is Tribe an' Island People had on de road dis year? Dey both look like dey had 'bout 20 or more total, an' at least half if not more was hugemonguous truck. If yuh did get stick behind dem, yuh get well jam...unless yuh get stick BETWEEN dem dat is. I hear from folks who did get ketch tryin' to get into Diego on Tuesday 'bout 6:00pm an' did bounce up Tribe heading along de Western Main Rd an' across to de Foreshore, effectively disruptin' traffic on not one or two, but ALL three East-West roads (Mucurapo Rd bein' de 3rd). It did take dem nearly ah hour to work dey way back EAST to Woodbrook an' be able to get onto de Foreshore by de stadium. But dat wasn' de end, because de bright sparks who was guidin' Tribe decide dey did need to take up de whole eastbound side of de road... de result of said 'decision' bein' dat traffic comin' outta Diego/Carenage had was to cross over onto de westbound side an' head east on de shoulder!

Yuh Tants so glad dat me an' de Squeeze did take a rest from de big band scene dis year an' play sailor mas wid some pardners in a small band dat had fuh de most 'bout 200 people, a panside, an' a DJ in a small truck who did have some real nice ole music...de ting was sweet too bad.
It didn' have no hustle, no jammin' (unless yuh decide to take a back-back on somebody), an' once de band wasn' near a judgin' point de road was we own to play we mas. But de nicest ting 'bout de mas was dat it had young an' old in de band...it look as if dey had entire family from granny an' gramps right dong to de grandchirren playin' de mas an' well an' truly enjoyin' deyself. I hopin' we could get de pans off de trucks an' back on de road where dey belong...it go slow de pace of de Carnival dong from Instant Heart Attack to a reasonable rate.

Is when we go realise dat technology done gone an' leff we behind?
All dat macco setta speaker an' amplifier an' ting long outlive dey useful life...de odder day I was in a lime by some friends an' was wonderin' where dey hide de DJ equipment because I couldn' see nuttin' around. Is then mih maccomere did point out dat it was she grandaughter who was de DJ an' all de noise was comin' from de gyul iPod dat was "dock" in a speaker setup ting dat coulda easy lorse behind de flowers arrangement she granny had on de table.
Mr. DJ, yuh days seem to be well an' truly numbered...
